Why Choose Implants?

The “Gold Standard” for Tooth Replacement.

A missing tooth affects more than just your smile. It can lead to bone loss in your jaw, shifting teeth, and difficulty chewing. Unlike bridges or dentures which sit on top of the gums, a dental implant replaces the tooth root.

  • The Implant: A medical-grade titanium screw placed gently into the jawbone (acting as the root).
  • The Abutment: The connector piece.
  • The Crown: The custom-made porcelain tooth that looks and functions exactly like your natural teeth.

The Benefits

Looks & Feels Natural

They are the only tooth replacement option that mimics the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference.

Stops Bone Loss

When you lose a tooth, the jawbone shrinks over time (causing a ‘sunken’ facial appearance). Implants stimulate the bone, keeping it healthy and strong.

Eat Anything You Want

Unlike dentures, which can slip when eating apples or steak, implants are anchored in the jaw. You can bite with full force and confidence.

Protects Healthy Teeth

Unlike a dental bridge, which requires cutting down the neighbouring healthy teeth to act as anchors, an implant stands alone. We don't touch your other teeth.

Built to Last

With proper care and oral hygiene, dental implants can last a lifetime.

No Messy Adhesives

No soaking them in a glass at night and no sticky glues to hold them in place. You brush and floss them just like your real teeth. ‘The Drawbacks’

The Drawbacks

Higher Upfront Cost

Implants are a significant investment compared to dentures or bridges. (However, because they last longer, they are often more cost-effective over 20 years).

It Takes Time

This is not a “quick fix.” The process requires patience. From the initial scan to the final crown, the journey can take 3–6 months to allow for proper healing.

Requires Minor Surgery

Placing the implant is a surgical procedure. While usually done under local anaesthetic with minimal discomfort, there is a short recovery period involved.

Bone Density is Key

You need enough healthy bone to hold the screw. If you have experienced bone loss, you might need a bone graft first, which adds time and cost to the treatment.

Strict Hygiene is Required

You cannot neglect them. Just like natural teeth, implants can develop gum infection (peri-implantitis) if not kept clean.

Smoking Risks

Smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure. We often recommend quitting or cutting back during the healing phase.

What to Expect

Phase 1:

The Blueprint (Consultation & 3D Scan)

We use state-of-the-art 3D CBCT Scanners to map your nerves and bone density. This digital precision ensures your surgery is safe and predictable.

Phase 2:

The Placement

A minor surgical procedure to place the titanium post. This is done under local anaesthesia (just like a filling). Most patients report very little discomfort afterwards.
Phase 3:

The Healing (Osseointegration)

We let nature take its course. Over 3–6 months, your jawbone fuses with the implant, creating a rock-solid foundation. You may wear a temporary tooth during this time so you aren’t left with a gap.
Phase 4:

The Restoration

Once healed, we attach your custom porcelain crown. You leave our Northcote clinic with a complete smile, ready to enjoy your favourite foods again.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an x-ray?
Yes! A 3D view of your jawbone is critical, we can take one here at Bytes of Northcote
Is the surgery painful?
Most patients are surprised at how easy it is. You are numb during the procedure, and post-op discomfort is usually managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
How long do implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular checks, they can last a lifetime.
How much does it cost?
Every case is different. A standard single implant starts from roughly $4,500. We provide a full written quote after your scan.
Why do I need bone grafting?

In order to have a strong foundation, implants need to be supported and integrated into bone. When there has been bone loss because a tooth as been missing for a long time, often we will need to ‘augment’ the jaw to ensure there is sufficient volume of bone for implant placement. This can be done prior to at the same time as implant placement.
